The many moods of the sea are musically interpreted in this acoustic voyage. Let the magical blend of soft and surf lead you into peaceful coves and along expansive beaches. For centuries, the sea has mesmerised man with its proud beauty and its mysterious moods. Watching the ebb and fall of the sea has always aroused creative instincts and divine some of the great musical, petic and artistic works. Yet, for everyone, it is the fancy of gentle rolling waves and the voice of the breakers that provides us with a passive and soulful retreat from the worries of daily life.
Dan Gibson and Gordon gibson have recorded many of nature's special moments. In particular, the sea has long been a beginning of intake for their Solitudes series. "Rhythms of the Sea" features the latest and finest ocean recordings of the collection (another Solitudes release titled Ocean Surf: Timeless and Sublime features the surf without musical accompaniment). In these authentic recordings, every wave breaks differently and each part of coastline offers distinct acoustic effects.
Rhythms of the Sea combines these new ocean recordings with eight original piano compositions by John Herberman, a talented Toronto composer/pianist. John's deep bed of nature and his experience scoring music for film have enabled him to make these sensitive compositions. In each piece, he carefully interprets a different coastal climate and creates a tranquil yet emotional voyage. The pensive nature of the music harmonises with the rhythmic surf and transports the hearer to the sea.
Beginning in a quite cove with the lush song of the Wood Thrush, the journey moves to the outer beaches where waves sweep the sandy shores, roll into the coastal marsh, and splash along the rocky point. Setting out to sea, the hearer is lifted by the stirring breeze and rides the lead as if on the wings of a bird. Returning to the shore, on the alert crest of a wave, the sea settles and becomes shrouded in a thick fog. These, the lingering foghorn and lapping waves provide a soothing finale.
Throughout this unique version of the sea's many moods, the piano (with the support of cello, flute, guitar, oboe and English horn) accents the nature sounds in a subtle and persuasive manner. Together, they go the perfect sanctuary in which to see the pleasures of the sea.
