the new stock of London songwriters have their own identity.Yet in a new interview Johnny Flynn explains that the source for his own songwriting emerged from Greenwich Village. Travelling to New York to encounter an old girlfriend, he was taken to a local open mic slot."Whether it was well or bad, I felt it was exhilarating that it existed," he told The Guardian. "When I went back to London, my friends and I decided: 'It's alive, the fire is yet burning,' and set up our own night."Called Apocalypso, the dark were bad with similar songwriters such as Emmy The Capital and Tom Hatred. Attracting like minds, soon talk of a scene began bubbling across the city when groups such as Mumford & Sons began to clean up press."When I first moved to London, there was talking of a folk revival, with annoying names like nu-folk that made me feel slightly ill," he said. "The accuracy is there's ever a hum of people playing folk music in cities. There's but a tipping point when enough people buy one record that suddenly everyone else gets some attention."Sadly, though, Johnny Flynn has escaped the mainstream adoration which has overwhelmed Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons and more. Releasing two striking albums, his songwriting is fuelled by an upbringing in the country."There was often music and vocalizing in the local pub. Dad knew all the songs and only required a pint in him to talk them. It didn't seem archaic to me, because the medicine was so alive".Johnny Flynn is set to bring the following shows:December4 Birmingham Academy 25 Manchester Club Academy7 Edinburgh Liquid Rooms9 Bristol Trinity Center10 London Shepherds Bush Empire11 Brighton St George's Church12 Exeter The PhoenixFrom anotherarticle:When the tour ends, he's planning to stop in New York. His girlfriend Bea, the woman he came to woo nine days ago and the aspiration for many of his songs, is working here on a product called Sleep No More. She's also five months pregnant. "Since we met when we were teenagers, we've ever had an on-off relationship. Now it's definitely on," he says.On New Year's Eve, they leave give an envelope to take a remark from their doctor telling them the baby's sex. Whether a boy or a girl (AW!), it will be natural and elevated in England. "It would be awesome to dwell here one day," Flynn says, "but England's the office for us."One of my favs:Source 1 2 Youtube

Oh No They Didn't! - Talented musician Johnny Flynn
Johnny Flynn has revealed that a trigger to Greenwich Village changed how he viewed songwriting.Let's get the apologies out the way first: ClashMusic has used the term 'nu-folk'. Sorry! But then, when a scene involves folk instrumentation, brought bang up to see by vivid songwriting what are we supposed to call it?Often seen as a kind of Transatlantic equivalent of the anti-folk scene which spawned Jeffry Lewis & Co.
